Review of www.schoolbooks.ie

4/5

I used this website for the first time last August. I was fed up making numerous visits to the local school book supplier as they rarely had all books required in stock at the one time.I got the boys books lists, Junior infants and second class and ordered them all plus the miscellaneous stationary and odds and ends required too. It did take a while to add all the books to the shopping basket but at least it could be done at night when the kids had gone to bed. The website is very easy to use and straightforward with a search facility so that all books can be found. I had no problems. The books that I purchased cost the same as buying them from the local shop. There was just a max delivery fee of approximately €8.The books did take a couple of weeks to arrive but that was at the peak time for school book purchase. Will definitely be using this website for next year too, but will probably place my order earlier to avoid the late August rush. Would recommend. .... Read Original Full Review.

Review of Roam4Free

5/5

I ordered my Roam4Free SIM card yesterday and got it this morning! Pat and the boys obviously understand customer service.

Just popped it in the phone and it connected to Meteor. Interesting that I wasn't asked for a PIN (on my unlocked Nokia N70). I rang the new number that I was given (+37253166646 if you want to ring me when I'm abroad) from the landline and after a small delay I was connected to my mobile.

Very very slick!

Calling out is a little less seamless but works fine as long as you ignore what the phone tells you. I rang the landline from the mobile (including +353) and got an error message from the phone. But a few seconds later my mobile started ringing with the incoming number being it's own (if you know what I mean). I answered it, got an instructional message and then the landline started ringing and the connection made.

Sweet.

On a slightly related note, I tried Jajah yet again on the N70 and it makes the phone almost unusable by interfering with the normal operation of standard keys like "hang-up".

You receive free calls in 65 countries with your caller paying standard rates to roaming mobiles (or much lower rates using something like SkypeOut). You can use it in 115 countries. Making a call whilst roaming costs e.g. 50c in the UK, France, Spain. The rates for the US are high (EUR2+) in both directions but I believe they are working on that.

It's EUR20 for the SIM including EUR5 call credit.

With savings like the ones they are offering, I really think Roam4Free is going to be a huge success.

Review of BarCamp Ireland South East

4/5

Keith, Tom and the gang organised a great conference on Saturday and once again, everyone left with their heads buzzing with ideas and plans.

I drove Damien and Tom Atkins from Cork and we arrived at 9.30 to be met by snacks, coffee and juggling balls. An excellent start. The location of TSSG is stunningly scenic but up a country lane where you are sure you've gone the wrong way!

The layout for the day was on the whiteboard and the sessions were set to 40mins after the realisation at the Cork BarCamp that 30 mins was too short. But actually it looks like the standard practice of 1 hour may have to be used the next time as everyone ran over again.

AS far as scheduling is concerned, my only small criticism is that because all the slots were pre-filled with pre-agreed speakers, there was not much opportunity for the ad-hoc aspect. Maybe setting one small room aside for impromptu talks would take care of that?

Both panels were a big success and the format worked really well. I took part in the "Building a Web Services company" panel and I think many people found it useful. It was interesting hearing the common threads between us all. Joe's mantra of "simplify simplify simplify" really echoed my experiences.

My highlight was Donncha's talk which I videoed. Both the WordPress section and the virtual team (aka working from home) section contained tons of valuable insights. That could easily have gone on for another 40 mins! But the sod never gave me a WordPress sticker like he promised.

One talk which I am very annoyed I missed was Justin of the legendary tache Mason's one on EC2 and S3. I'll be watching out like a hawk for the video of that.

Lunch was excellent and I caught up with Jan from Touristr. After some help from Stephen, both myself and Justin got our wifi connection working.

Pecha Kucha went down very well again and the scope was stretched to allow non-delicious users to just share great URLs. TJ did a very nice "here are 5 URLs you need to know about".

A question for all attendees; Most BarCamps are two days. Do people think we might stretch to that the next time? It would allow for a slower pace each day with gaps between the talks and less clashes.

A bunch of us stayed the night and had some solid grub in Geoff's followed by some solid pints and a few glasses of wine.

A seriously great success for Keith and the gang. Looking forward to the next one already! .... Read Original Full Review.

Review of Flexa Children’s Furniture

4/5

Bit by bit, our house is being taken over by FLEXA beds. As each child graduates from cot, a new one is purchased.Oscar has the bunkbed version. The next 2 have the single beds surrounded by wooden rails 3/4s of the way around, to avoid any accidental falling out during the night. Fionn is about to be given his eviction orders from the cot, and so today, another order was sent for yet another bed. This demonstrates how happy we are with these beds so far. They are great. Very solid, easy to assemble, great to look at and safe. The kids love them and are looking forward to when they get older to start adapting them to the older kids and teenager versions with their desks or hang out couches. There is a huge selection of accessory furniture in the range: shelves, wardrobes, bookcases, cushions, curtains, slides, chairs, storage boxes. A fortune could be spent but its up to you how many or how few options to choose. The wood can be clear varnished or have a whitewashed look. We did splash out on the flexa mattress which is sprung and has a removable, washable zipped cover, and which I would definitely recommend. Our local supplier is: www.robinwoodfurniture.com, located in Carrigtwohill in Cork but they deliver. It's not cheap, approx EUR550 for bed and mattress, the last time we purchased, but worth the money to date. .... Read Original Full Review.

Review of Laptops Direct

2/5

On Wed 20th Dec 2006 I ordered an Acer laptop on the Laptops Direct Irish website. I was encouraged by their message which guaranteed delivery before Christmas (optimistic I thought, but that’s what they’d written). I didn’t sweat when there was no sign of it before the hols, the week after would be time enough.

I started the phone calls to Customer Service (redirected from a Dublin number to the U.K.) on Wed 27th Dec, when I was told it would be going out that day.

On Thurs 28th I was told it had been sent the previous day.

On Fri 29th I phoned, trying to get confirmation of arrival so I wouldn’t be sitting around all day, and was told that it hadn’t been sent at all! I was on the 2nd list of people waiting for Acer laptops, and that it might go out the first week in Jan 07.

So that week I phoned Customer Service, and they said it went out on Thurs 4th Jan, and would be delivered on the Fri. The courier they used was City Link, and they gave me their number to contact directly. After phoning and e-mailing City Link on the Fri they couldn’t trace anything without a tracking number, which I contacted Laptops Direct for on Monday - Oh no, we didn’t use City Link, the courier was MF Logistics - For jaysus’ sake!

On Monday, I phoned MF Logistics customer service, they said it would be delivered that day – oddly enough it didn’t show up. On Tuesday I phoned again and they promised to get back after they’d got an update back from the courier in Cork – I heard nothing. On Wednesday, I phoned MF again and got the number of the courier in Cork. BC Transport in Little Island couldn’t have been nicer and said they’d phone back when they got the status on the parcel; which they did a couple of hours later, and I finally got the box at 3.30pm on Wed 10th January.

I’m knackered from doing the work that Laptops Direct and MF Logistics customer services departments should have been doing for me. All they wanted to do was give me the number of the next person in the chain, so I could chase them up – such crap service!

PS. It gets better, a day later I've realised they've sent me the wrong bag, I ordered an XL size for the 17", but got a standard size. Now I've to go through the whole rigmarole of Returns etc, aarrggh. .... Read Original Full Review.

Review of Wheelybug

4/5

We got 2 of these for our son's first birthday. Initially reaction from him was one of distain, whilst our 3 older kids loved them and raced up and down the corridor from playroom to sitting room. In retrospect, he was too young for them. It is now, when he is 18 months old that he has gotten the hang of them and absolutely loves racing around on the ladybird or bumble bee.
They are extremely robust and great fun. The four castors enable movement in all directions. The seat is comfortable, all parts are rounded, no sharp edges and its easy to clean.
The come in ladybird, bumble bee, cow or mouse versions, in a small version or a large (3yr+).

They are expensive but definitely a big hit in our house! .... Read Original Full Review.
